San Antonio Mehndi
In a cozy home nestled within a San Antonio, Texas neighbourhood, friends and family gathered, their laughter mingling with the tantalising scent of aromatic spices wafting from the kitchen.
The living room had been transformed into a colourful oasis, with vibrant fabrics draped from ceiling to floor, and cushions arranged in a circle on the floor. The radiant bride-to-be, Sheetal, sat surrounded by her closest friends and relatives while the mehndi artist meticulously adorned her hands and feet with intricate henna designs. The friends and family played the dholki while singing songs during a game of antakshri.
The mehndi ceremony is a fun-filled celebration with dancing and singing. It is one of many Hindu wedding rituals, typically held 1-2 nights before the wedding to allow the rich colours of the mehndi, or henna, to develop. Mehndi is applied to the bride's hands and feet in very intricate and beautiful designs.
